Ross McNae releases debut solo album Tumbling Sideways
Ross McNae has released Tumbling Sideways, the first album from his new solo project - a beautifully understated collection of instrumental pieces that showcases a different side of the musician’s creative voice.
Many listeners will know McNae as the bassist, pianist and backing vocalist in acclaimed Glasgow alternative rock band Twin Atlantic, a group that has built a reputation over the past decade for their anthemic sound and chart success.
With Tumbling Sideways, McNae turns his focus inward, exploring a more intimate and exploratory musical landscape. The eight-track album unfolds across a series of atmospheric miniatures and textured compositions, each piece revealing subtle shifts in mood and tone.
Tracks such as “Rain Now,” “Turn Around,” and the title track “Tumbling Sideways” move between reflective ambience and quietly propulsive rhythms, creating a listening experience that feels both cinematic and deeply personal. Across the album, McNae’s instinct for melody and arrangement shines through in understated but compelling ways.
Running just over twenty minutes, Tumbling Sideways is a concise yet immersive record - one that highlights McNae’s curiosity as a musician and composer outside the context of a full band.
While he continues his work with Twin Atlantic, this project offers a glimpse into a different creative space, one driven by experimentation, texture and atmosphere.
